AVI to MPEG to WMV
This is one of the posts where I mention some details of an obscure tech process which is likely of interest to no-one apart from myself, but may come in handy when I want to do it again and can´t remember what I did.
It all started when I wanted to download some video for my iPaq, which only plays WMV files.
I found a freeware AVI to WMV convertor --> http://www.boxoft.com/avi-to-wmv/
But it actually produced MPEG files which wouldn´t get picked up by the "update library" function and couldn´t be played
2nd step was a freeware MPEG to WMV convertor --> http://www.winff.org/html_new/
Success!

Airline hand luggage sizes
Apparently most airlines including british airways have the same size limits: 56 x 45 x 25cm
Some have smaller limits though, I understand that ryan air only allows 55 x 40 x 20cm and first choice only allows 45 x 35 x 20cm

Recipe: Tofu Marengo
dish. Due to a hearing error I thought for years that it was made with
meringue, and thus not easy to make a vegan version of. Happily the
confusion was resolved earlier this year, and I've since had a couple
of goes at it.
I found a couple of sources regarding the dish:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Marengo
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chicken_marengo_on_94849
The second attempt (pictured) was the most successful. This time I
abandoned the attempt to fry the tofu in flour, I just fried it in
olive oil till crispy, then stabbed each slice a couple of times to
let the sauce penetrate it. Didn't have any thyme so used tarragon,
oregano and bay leaves
So what other favourite meals of famous generals should I go for the
develop the theme?

Photography
When I was a nipper I was given a camera, along with some notes on shutter speeds to use depending on how light it was, and summat about "f" values. I never understood it. Still don't. And since it was in the old chemical photography days, in the time between taking the photos and getting the images back I'd forgotten what I took a picture of, or why. And how. I can do some technical stuff but never got my head round photography. I'd kind of like to though, and have had a few attempts at "arty photos". Recently I took these, which I like
When I say recently, it was in April 2012. Images taken - I'm pretty sure - in FACT in Liverpool

Online auctions, and trust
Occasionally I buy or sell things on eBay. When I tried to do this today I couldn't - I can't list any items until I have set up an automatic method for paying their fees. This seems to mean pre-authorising PayPal on my credit card - which will only happen when I believe that it is a reputable and well-run organisation. While the pigs don their goggles and taxi down the runway I headed over to eBid.net
Looking good here, and my item is listed, but then I got an email. Apparently my account is unavailable until I have provided them with a scan of a recent utility bill and my passport/driving licence. There are very few people who I will trust with documents like that, and eBid aren't on the list
I'm going down to the supermarket to write out some of those little cards that they have...

Compund Interest Woman
This outfit gave me an idea for a super heroine. Although it appears unlikely Einstein actually said that "Compound Interest is the most powerful force in the Universe"

Manchester weather
I had a beer with D last night. We were in hot sun and talking about how changeable the weather has been recently. I didn't take a picture. Here is a picture that we talked about though, taken the next morning - in the rain.

Alan Moore knows the score
I don't normally link to other people's articles, but the opening to this piece on the BBC site by Alan Moore made me laugh quite considerably:
"Without wishing to overstate my case, everything in the observable universe definitely has its origins in Northamptonshire... "

I'm a fattie
I noticed recently that I can't get into the trousers of one of my suits. Measuring my waist today revealed a number so awful that I can only post it in code: guveglfvkvapurf
I've not been running or cycling much recently, which probably has had some impact on my sveltness. The resolution needs to be two-fold to address the roll of fat as well as the slack abdominal muscles. So, more sit-ups and fewer cakes.
Check back in nine days to see my revised score.

Recipe: BSG cookies
The first part of the name comes from a TV series that M and I were working our way through when these were invented (22nd Feb 2011). The second part I'm not sure about. These things kind of sit on the boundary between cookies, biscuits, flapjack and buns. All the measurements are in fluid ounces because we were staying in a cottage in the wilds of Derbyshire with no scales.
The recipe is a Frankenstein-style conglomerate of other recipes. I've no idea about the attribution but if anything here looks like your published recipe then get in touch and I'll give you credit. Anyway, how to make them?
Mix up the following, and bake for approx 20 minutes in a 200 degC oven:
- 8 fl oz flour
- 8 fl oz oatmeal*
- 8 fl oz sugar e.g. demerara (sp?)
- 2 fl oz ground flax seeds
- 4 fl oz oil e.g. sunflower
- 4 fl oz soya milk
- 4 heaped teaspoons of jam e.g. plum
- 20 raspberries - or substitutes such as raisins
As always, if you make this I'd very much like to see a photo
* When available I used medium oatmeal. Just made a batch this afternoon but only 2 fl oz of oatmeal in the packet so the rest of the 8 was made up of porridge oats and a R_adybr_k like product. Seemed more absorbent then usual so added extra soya milk
Finally, not sure about the best way to bake. Previously I've slopped it onto a baking tray and carved into chunks afterwards. This time used a pre-dimpled baking tray so they look like buns. Should have greased the dimples - would have been easier to extract them

A couple of pints
Had a couple of beers with a man now known as GP. Had another go with the camera on my Nokia X3-02 and tried out the digital zoom. Doesn't seem much better than taking a normal picture and zooming in afterwards, to my untrained eye anyway

A night out in Preston
Went over to Preston for some beers with PH and MR. Preston has changed, but it still looks a lot like it used to. I kind of miss it; well I kind of miss the life I lived there
++Edit++
Not that my current life is unsatisfactory e.g. now I have more money and don't live in squalor. But I partied more then..

Fire at Kebabish, Rusholme
I've had the plan of being a journalist for a while now. Especially when I get old and am looking for ways to supplememt my meagre pension. I'll sit in my caravan in Hebden Bridge and as the rain bouces of the roof, I'll tap some wise words into my PC and hope that The Guardian will send me a few quid in return.
But what to write about? Well, I could hardly help noticing that something happened in Rusholme today. The traffic was snarled up and about three fire engines, and at least one ambulance and police car were in attendance. There was tape across the road and cops turning people back.
From the edge of the tape I could see that Kebabish was black inside and smoke was coming out of the roof. Not gushing out - the fire was pretty much extinguished by the time I was on the scene.
Anyway, here's a photo, and I'm going to tweet a link to this and see how much traffic I get. If anyone from the Guardian wants to give me a regular slot, please leave your details in a comment
